George Butler is an award winning illustrator, who specialises in reportage illustrations concentrating on travel and current affairs. In 2012, Butler walked from Turkey to Syria where, as a special guest of the rebel Free Syria Army, he illustrated the effects of the civil war on the small, empty town of Azaz.
Butler is renowned for recording extraordinary events with his typical style of illustrating with ink rather than taking photographs. He has recorded such places as refugee camps in Bekaa Valley, in the oil fields in Azerbaijan, in Gaza with Oxfam and other world events published globally in the New York Times, the Times (London), BBC, CNN and Der Spiegel (magazine). He believes “The skill is to use drawing as an interview technique for an entire situation.”
